Ships log, 08.27.01 First Entrée:

This has been a long time coming, and I would like to blame Terry for this, but I cannot. I was just told I could, so it is Terry's fault. There now that, that is settled time to get down to business. This log will be on going to try and let you know what kind of trips we had, along with the weather, water vis, game, and or pictures.
Saturday's trip was to Catalina (island run a muck). Before I go any further, everyone please be careful when diving a Catalina. There is a growing problem with boats that will not heed the warning of the diver down flag. I have suggested that divers come up as close to the boat as possible. Thus decreasing your chances of injury. Remember there is no law that requires boats to stay a certain distance from any dive boat. I wish there was. Sorry off on a tangent already.

First Dive:
The Quarry. On the surface the water was beautiful, but after about 30 feet, the vis dropped. Two Black Sea Bass were spotted, with no current, all had good dive.
Second Dive:
Yellow Tail Point. Vis picked up some. Good dive.
Third Dive:
Isthmus Reef. The wind was howling, but that kept the other boats away. Vis picked up more to around 40 feet. Very good dive.
We were a little late leaving the dock as the manifest and tank count did not match. After repeated announcements, and recounting tanks, we found out that the instructor of the advanced class was busy telling his class how to sign in. He and several students were the missing divers. The "OOPS OF THE DAY" prize goes to him.
Sunday's trip was to San Clemente. I wish every crossing was as smooth as this one. Hardly a swell at all.
First Dive:
East End Reef. A growing favorite spot for many divers. Three Black Sea Bass were spotted, the largest being over 5 feet long. Vis was about 100 feet, with no current. Bugs everywhere. They know that it is still a ways off from the opened weekend.
Dive Two:
Outside the inside Boilers. Dropped the anchor off the drop off in 60 feet and backed the boat back to 35 feet. No current and great vis. One of the photographers told me about a picture he took of about 5 Pink Abalones all in a row. No Black Sea Bass, but very nice.
Dive Three and Four:
Little Flower. Not much left of the wreck, but a huge Black Sea Bass likes it. Dean and several other divers saw it. They said it was the size of Volkswagen. Others saw several in the ravine on the outside in the deeper waters. A Turtle was spotted here by several divers. Too bad that no one got any pics of it. Again no current, with great vis.
A little bumpy on the way home after we passed Catalina, but all in all a great trip.
