Ship's log: Thursday, November 25, 2004First off Happy Turkey Day to all. Even the moose bros. I hope everyone eats too much, but has a great time. JR and I will be down on the GE cooking Turkeys and ham for the next 3 charter days. And don't forget what tomorrow is. Of course National Left Over Turkey Day. A few weeks ago off of SBI we once again had to opportunity to see several Orcas. They really are a neat whale to watch. We found a pod of around 15 to 20. We followed them until they were tiered of us and that was around a half hour. Bug season is winding down, but a few divers are still catching them. Last weekend we dove the oil rig "Edith" with "Care". This a group sponsored by the oil companies to keep the rigs here. I don't normally dive the rigs, a little too tuff for me to get close too, but if you get a chance go dive them. They are incredible. From the start of the platform to over 200' every single inch is covered with life. That does not count the fish. Anyway the trip was very successful, and the group made a video of the rigs. When I find out if it is available to watch or buy I will let every know. Next day we went to Catalina with Sport Chalet. The crossing was a little tuff and a few divers were praying to the mightiest sea god of them all; "Ralph". We made our first dive at the "Isthmus" so both the open water and advanced divers could make their dives. The vis was great so we stayed for another. For the third we moved over to "Lion's Head" and finished the day there. The ride home was getting interesting as an East wind was picking up. An Easterly in our channel is the worst it gets, and depending on the wind better off saying home. Unfortunately that is just what happened. Sunday morning around 3am all hell broke loose. The wind continued to howl the rest of the night. I finally got up at 4:30am to check things out. The wind was still blowing pretty hard. I waited for the DM's to show up and cancelled the trip. Some of the divers were mad, but most understood. Three other boats tried to make it out only to turn back within a couple of miles of the break wall. After a decision to cancel you always wonder if the right decision was made. As I am writing this, it is getting darker out and only 930 in the morning. It is getting very foggy out. So I guess it is time to get JR and start cooking. Until next time…………. Captain Tim Burke Great Escape Charters
